Published on 2013-05-08 by CreateSpace

The book provides medical evidence underlying our intuitive knowledge of heartache. It presents heartache as a legitimate illness we need to treat--just as we would any other illness involving physical pain. Documented medical stories and data illustrate how heartache acts upon the body to produce the profound changes specifically noted in what is commonly called the |broken heart syndrome.| The book is a guide to help treat acute heartache proactively and to rehabilitate the patient's broken heart that has been surrendered to helplessness.

By:Marian Osterweis,Arthur Kleinman,David Mechanic
Published on 1987-01-01 by National Academies Press

Pain--it is the most common complaint presented to physicians. Yet pain is subjective--it cannot be measured directly and is difficult to validate. Evaluating claims based on pain poses major problems for the Social Security Administration (SSA) and other disability insurers. This volume covers the epidemiology and physiology of pain; psychosocial contributions to pain and illness behavior; promising ways of assessing and measuring chronic pain and dysfunction; clinical aspects of prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation; and how the SSA's benefit structure and administrative procedures may affect pain complaints.

Neuropsychedelia PDF
By:Nicolas Langlitz
Published on 2012-11-07 by Univ of California Press

Neuropsychedelia examines the revival of psychedelic science since the |Decade of the Brain.| After the breakdown of this previously prospering area of psychopharmacology, and in the wake of clashes between counterculture and establishment in the late 1960s, a new generation of hallucinogen researchers used the hype around the neurosciences in the 1990s to bring psychedelics back into the mainstream of science and society. This book is based on anthropological fieldwork and philosophical reflections on life and work in two laboratories that have played key roles in this development: a human lab in Switzerland and an animal lab in California. It sheds light on the central transnational axis of the resurgence connecting American psychedelic culture with the home country of LSD. In the borderland of science and religion, Neuropsychedelia explores the tensions between the use of hallucinogens to model psychoses and to evoke spiritual experiences in laboratory settings. Its protagonists, including the anthropologist himself, struggle to find a place for the mystical under conditions of late-modern materialism.

Molecular Approaches to Reproductive and Newborn Medicine PDF
By:Diana W. Bianchi,Errol R. Norwitz
Published on 2015-07-31 by

Written and edited by experts in the field, this collection from Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Medicine reviews our understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in conception, pregnancy, labor, and birth, and how molecular techniques are being applied to reproductive and perinatal health. The contributors discuss the gene expression profiles and epigenetic characteristics of sperm, the ovary, the endometrium, and the placenta, as well as the molecules involved in feto-maternal communication, including various endocrine, vascular, and immune factors. They also consider how we can harness this knowledge to improve fertility, conception rates, and embryo implantation success, leading to healthy, full-term pregnancies. The authors also review innovative technologies to diagnose genetic disorders at the fetal and neonatal stages and the social and ethical dilemmas these pose. The volume is therefore an indispensable reference for all scientists and physicians interested in deepening our understanding of human reproductive biology and improving our chances of having healthy children.

Marx's Dream PDF
By:Tom Rockmore
Published on 2018-06-08 by University of Chicago Press

Two centuries after his birth, Karl Marx is read almost solely through the lens of Marxism, his works examined for how they fit into the doctrine that was developed from them after his death. With Marx’s Dream, Tom Rockmore offers a much-needed alternative view, distinguishing rigorously between Marx and Marxism. Rockmore breaks with the Marxist view of Marx in three key ways. First, he shows that the concern with the relation of theory to practice—reflected in Marx’s famous claim that philosophers only interpret the world, while the point is to change it—arose as early as Socrates, and has been central to philosophy in its best moments. Second, he seeks to free Marx from his unsolicited Marxist embrace in order to consider his theory on its own merits. And, crucially, Rockmore relies on the normal standards of philosophical debate, without the special pleading to which Marxist accounts too often resort. Marx’s failures as a thinker, Rockmore shows, lie less in his diagnosis of industrial capitalism’s problems than in the suggested remedies, which are often unsound. \u200b Only a philosopher of Rockmore’s stature could tackle a project this substantial, and the results are remarkable: a fresh Marx, unencumbered by doctrine and full of insights that remain salient today.

Cell, Tissue, and Organ Cultures in Neurobiology PDF
By:S. Fedoroff
Published on 2012-12-02 by Elsevier

Cell, Tissue, and Organ Cultures in Neurobiology emerged from an international workshop held at the University of Saskatchewan in March 1977. This book reviews the uses of cell, tissue, and organ cultures in neurobiological research. It brings together an interdisciplinary perspective from morphology, biochemistry, pharmacology, endocrinology, embryology, and genetics. The book is organized into seven parts. Part I contains papers on the characteristics of differentiated cells. Part II presents studies on cell differentiation in primary cultures. Part III deals with studies on cell cultures and cell strains. Part IV focuses on phenotypic cell expression. Part V examines various cellular interactions. Part VI covers studies on nutrition while Part VII takes up applications of cell tissue and organ cultures in neurobiology. The book is directed toward tissue culturists concerned with the nervous system, as well as all neurobiologists, cell biologists, and embryologists interested in learning how neural cells and tissues behave in cultures and what has been learned about the nervous system using tissue culture methods, including the applicability of tissue cultures to the study of cell differentiation.

Psychology of Change PDF
By:Katherine J. Reynolds,Nyla R. Branscombe
Published on 2014-11-20 by Psychology Press

This volume tackles the critical question of whether people change or whether they remain relatively constant across the lifespan. Much existing literature in psychology has largely endorsed the concept of stability. Indeed, in many people’s minds, the person is understood to be set in stone, as a function of early socialization and reaching a particular stage of development, evolutionary processes, or traits that are hard-wired from the beginning by genes and biology. However, in recent years, important scientific developments in theory and research concerning the psychology of change have emerged. In contrast to the commonly held conception of the individual as fixed, this research illustrates how malleable people are—showing much behavioral plasticity. The chapters in this volume, written by scholars at the cutting-edge of research into the psychology of change, showcase these developments with the aim of advancing knowledge of the field and encouraging further research. Topics addressed include brain function, cognitive performance, personality, psychological well-being, collective action to achieve social change, responses to life stressors, and political change. The message is clear—the culture we live in, what happens to us along the way, and who we think we are and want to be, can all change people.
